The Benefits of Turmeric Oil
Turmeric Oil is extracted from the rhizomes of the plant Curcuma longa L. It has long been used in traditional therapy for respiratory illnesses, liver disorders, inflammatory diseases, and diabetic wounds.
It’s active ingredient is curcumin which has been shown to have multiple sites of action and mechanisms of action. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to be beneficial for the treatment for arthritis, hypercholesterolemia, inflammatory bowel disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and some cancer therapies.
In addition, curcumin has been shown to inhibit 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the more active metabolite and binds the androgen receptor 5 times more tightly. It is this activation of androgen receptors that is felt to cause some types of alopecia. Blocking the production of DHT in the scalp can reduce the loss of hair and help with hair regrowth. Finesteride is a drug prescribed to treat hair loss that uses this same mechanism of action.
A recent double-blinded randomized control trial concluded that topical treatment of 5% Turmeric has similar effect to 5% Minoxidil (a drug commonly prescribed for hair loss).
It is Turmeric's ability to inhibit 5-alpha reductase which helps with hair loss reduction and hair growth promotion.
